How do you stop programs from running automatically on your computer?

I have Windows Vista, and programs like Aim always come up automatically. How do I change those settings?

hijackthis

It will help you stop any programs you need to. It does all the registry stuff you need, without having to learn to monkey around in regedit. I used regedit and manually play with things and still use hijackthis for most stuff.

I assume you mean that they launch at startup. The easiest way by far is to download the free program Quickstartup (http://www.glarysoft.com/quick-startup/) which is only a few megabytes in size. Once you have it installed, open it up and uncheck the programs you don't want. It even tells you how much memory is being used up and if the program is essential for startup or not (so you don't uncheck a necessary program). You'll be surprised to see how much faster your computer boots.
start-%26gt; run (or get to a CMD window)

type msconfig

click startup then uncheck the programs you don't want

I strongly suggest you only uncheck thoses that you know what they do, as this can really mess up your computer
Go to Start%26gt;All programs%26gt;Accessories%26gt;Run

In there, type %26quot;msconfig%26quot;

A menu will pop up. Go to the %26quot;Startup%26quot; tab

This lists all of the programs that start automatically when your computer turns on. Simply uncheck the programs you don't want to start up. But, BE VERY CAREFUL! Only uncheck the programs you know about, as checking anything else may cause your computer to not start up correctly.
Open up your start menu, in the search type in %26quot;msconfig%26quot; and press enter...after that a system configuration will pop up...go to the %26quot;startup%26quot; tab and uncheck anything that you don't want starting...common things are ADOBE, chat programs...just about everything...because if you need it...your computer will know to open and run it...just be careful you don't accidentally stop things like your audio/sound or anti-virus programs...manufacturer heading will help you decide better...the less you ahve starting up the faster your computer will start up ^^ have fun
go to start and type msconfig int he search bar. hit enter. go to startup tab and choose which programs you would like to start automatically. If this doesn't works you might change the settings in the program that starts automatically
