How do I control the programs that appear when I first turn on my computer?

I know there is a way to change the programs that first appear on a computer when it is first turned on, but I don't know how to do it. When I first boot up my computer, Microsoft Narrator always comes up, but I never wanted it to come on in the first place because it is annoying. How do I control the programs that come on when I first turn on my computer?

There is probably a folder called 'Start Up Items, or similar, which enables you to choose what opens when you turn on. That is certainly the case with Mac computers, though they are, of course much more user friendly computers than PCs......
