My Norton Security has always been protected, yet sometimes there's a red "X" sign. What's going on?

When I start using the computer and all of the programs show up on the background, the bottom icons started to appear, including the Norton Security. Most of the times Norton 360 - the name of this security program that I'm using - has a green check sign, meaning that the computer is protected (which is good).

But recently, within a few minutes of Norton and its green check sign, it changed to a red %26quot;X%26quot; sign, meaning that the computer is unprotected (which is bad). Yet when I double-clicked on the Norton icon twice and waited for a few minutes to see if I could check for virus scans, the green check sign (which is still good) comes back. I think that problem happens on the evening or when I haven't been using the computer in more than one day, even when I'm out on vacation. Maybe it's better to leave it on since morning to scan early.

I check on Norton daily and see the recent data on the most recent virus/spyware scan update and discover that while there were no virus risks, there was actually one other risk updated but was fixed. Maybe that's the problem.

What gives with that changing appearance? My Norton Security has always been protected, yet sometimes there's a red %26quot;X%26quot; sign. Do you know what's going on? Is there, or are there, any ways to fix that problem? It's annoying me.

I second that, conehead...

If the red x goes away, I'd guess that it's just a timing issue. That is, Norton isn't happy yet (no green check) until it finishes loading, updating, etc.

As long as it goes away you're ok. If not you need to look at it and see what's wrong. Usually the red x means that the real-time protection is off or the definitions are outdated.
have you opened up the security centre, and checked quarintine? there maybe something there to delete. Check history and see if it tell you anything, mine does that when the firewall is turned off? Yes I have an advanced firewall as well as Norton's 2 policeman at my front door. 2Gb of ram doesn't slow PC down at all
That is a sign that their service is turned off, you should right clk on it and check to see if that is the problem.
Mine has the same problem, and it still does. It's probably time to buy another year or so
norton is annoying try getting something else.
