How can I teach myself web design?

Can I become a self taught web designer? Which program would be the best to use to teach myself? And how long would it take to become a pro at this? I would be able to put in a lot of hours (at least 25 per week). And lastly, how would I keep up to date with all the changes in this area as I realise it is always changing!!

I don't necesarlily want to do this as a job - just want an extra skill!

Thanks for any help!!

Try visual studio 2008. It's free to use. From www.asp.net.
Look at w3schools.com
I've found the best place to learn HTML (web coding language) is to go to w3schools.com. They offer html,php,asp.net,javascript and more and even let you try the codes out on there site. HTML is the most basic and should only take you maybe 30 minutes to learn. Css is the next step up and is used to display colors and things like that on the site and it may take a few hours to learn that.
Well, fist of all, there is a difference between a web designer and a web developer. As far as I know, there is no classification as a web designer anymore, because in the old days that is where someone just designed a pretty layout in ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR or PHOTOSHOP and handed it off to a computer guy to code. Now, it is expected that you design and code things yourself. You must learn HTML computer code first. It is the language of web development. Make sure to learn it with Cascading style sheets and NOT with tables, as that is outdated. For that you do not even need a special programs. Also there is ADOBE DREAMWEAVER program that helps you to create websites. There are other programs such as ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR and PHOTOSHOP that will help to modify any illustrations of photos you with to publish onto the website. GO to the library or the bookstore and look for books that can guide you. But the first step is to learn HTML. (hypertext mark up language.) I find There is NO KEEPING UP with the changes unless you want to shell out thousands of dollars every year to update to the latest versions of the software. BY the way, it is completely false that HTML only takes a few hours to learn. I took it in college for 16 weeks and I still did not learn everything!
Well I have designed my share of websites, although I am not a pro I have used a lot of different web design programs. I would recommend Flash CS3 it's just the easiest to use, I'm not an expert but I have designed alot of sites on a variety of programs and Flash gave me the least trouble. How long will it take to be gud? well it depends on individual talent and the hours you put in, after 7 weeks I was starting to get real results. This software is rather visual, which means you don't have to spend time programming and can actually just get straight into page design. However if you were interested in writing a site it will also allow you to do that.
